Mathways is a project dedicated to helping Queens College’s students studying mathematics succeed in their goals. To achieve its objective, Mathways has several short-term projects, which include:
- Reach out to and build connections with the Queens College math department’s alumni to discover what careers they have pursued with their degree and how they might help the department better serve its students.
- Organize career panels featuring Queens College math alumni.
- Foster and build a community around the math department for current students to connect students with one another as well as with the math faculty.
- Collect and organize information pertaining to opportunities for students both locally and nationally, including internships, REUs, etc.
In the long term, we hope our efforts lead to a network that future math students of Queens College can utilize to build a career and find success. We also believe—through the resources we create and source—these efforts will have benefits to the undergraduate math community at large.
Mathways is hosted by the Queens College Department of Mathematics, run by Professor Nicholas Vlamis, and funded by the NSF LEAPS-MPS program (Grant #DMS–2212922). One of the explicit goals of the NSF LEAPS-MPS program is to increase the participation of individuals from underrepresented groups in mathematics in the scientific workforce of the future. The project is founded on the idea that the best way to achieve the aforementioned goal is to help Queens College’s students studying mathematics succeed in their goals. This is grounded in the fact that Queens, the NYC borough, is the most diverse county in the United States and Queens College’s students represent the diversity of the community.
